It took a while, but here it is at last; Latest // Greatest 15.
As you know I started listening to Perfume Genius back in May. After a lot of listens I’ve selected a few of the many gems, which now sparkle throughout this chapter of the playlist series. I’m a sucker for a vulnerable falsetto and this hits the spot. What else is on No.15? Read on…
We can thank my vacations for the delay but it’s helped to sweep up some later releases from much-anticipated artists such as SZA, who finally pushed out a studio album at the end of last week. CTRL is a treat… sometimes it’s tough to live up to expectations when they’re set so high but frankly, I’m in love with this album. I published a video to her current single “Love Galore” a week or so ago which you can check out here.
Whilst she’s the star I’m most excited about, there are some bigger names on this edition with Arcade Fire and Phoenix both making an appearance. Neither carry the same anticipation as far as I’m concerned (or Pitchfork, for that matter – checkout the review here), nor do they garner but music is the most subjective of topics so there’s plenty of buzz about those two acts.
Chloe x Halle make another appearance this month. Yes, the enigmatic duo are creeping into my most-played list, but it’s mostly due to coincidence with the pattern of their releases. This latest track comes from Netflix’s Dear White People. I was very happy to see another release from Ibeyi who tease a new album but don’t offer one just yet. Another all-girl duo, they were last seen in Beyonce’s “Formation” video.
Another track from LION BABE, ‘Hit The Ceiling”, brings the funk and there are plenty of other artists represented by one or two tracks, such as Sampa The Great, Kali Uchis and The Age of L.U.N.A.
That leaves the rest of the quantitative volume coming from Perera Elsewhere, a curious artist with a unique view on music. I found her via Pitchfork and she brings an edge to this edition of Latest // Greatest. So, here it is in a nutshell. Enjoy…
